Wow.. everybody is right to a point. They do see color, and color is absorbed at depths wich vary depending on the water. If fish couldnt see color, everyone would only need three flies. One white, one black, and one white/ black. I know thats probably over simplifying it....

salmon... that question is absolutely ridiculous. Of course salmon can see colors. When fly fishing for salmon, you would use a fly. People tend to use different color patterns in hope for the salmon to catch the salmon, such as the skunk pattern. This involves using black flies then white, then black. These fishermen are not just doing this for fun. Why would they keep switching( the job is really time wasting) flies if salmon could not see color.
Thats one reason why salmon can see colors. I really didnt mean to offend u in a way though. Hope this helps.

A) fish are color blind - they only see contrasts / patterns.
B) Water absorbs colors anyway as the water gets deeper (resp. as the object is farther away from the fish). I think Red disappears after 4 meters, green after 9, etc. At 25m blue is all that is left. Even if they could see colors, they would be different that the colors you see at the surface.

OK, after reading the answers of people saying fish can see colors, I did a bit of reserach. I usually go offshore deep-sea fishing, and don't do much inshore. Apparently inshore fish can detect colors, but offshore pelagics see little if any distinction in color.

Since salmon is an inshore fish, it probably can detect color.
