Yes! They can. I adopted an 8 year old cat from a lady who had had him since he was 6 weeks old. The lady had just had a new baby and was scared that since the cat had been her "baby" for so long that he would be jealous of the baby and would have a lot of emotional distress so she decided to put him up for adoption. I had had him for about 3 years and the lady called and said she would like to see him. The cat would run and hide under my bed anytime I had company other than my mother. When the lady came to my house and rang the doorbell, the cat turned to run for the bed and heard the the lady's voice and he turned back around and ran to her and started rubbing all over her legs and meowing with joy. The minute she sat down on the couch, he jumped up in her lap and started rubbing all over her and purring up a storm! When she left, he literally cried for days. I called the lady and told her about his crying and after she admitted to crying herself, decided that it was too hard on both of them so she would not come to visit again.

Hi there...certainly! Cats remember scents and sounds from the person who has cared for them. As soon as your return they may be bounding over as quick he can to greet you.

Here's a heart-warming story of a leopard cat who was released back into the wild and 1-1/2 years later remembered the animal trainer who cared for him: http://www.clickertraining.com/node/63

Definitely.

There are tons of stories of animals meeting up with former owners and remembering them immediately.

My parents only visit once a year and my cats and dogs remember them each and every time.

Cats remember, believe me. This is actually a very sad story. I grew up with a cat that adopted me. I was HERS. She would lay on my chest at night as I slept, and growl at any noises she heard. She would worm her way between me and my (at that point) girl friend and growl at her as if to say "he's mine, and you can't have him". I eventually grew up, moved out and moved across the country, and away from my cat. About 10 years later, my Mom passed away, and I returned "back east" to settle the estate. I turned the key to my Mother's apartment and there was "Ziggy", that cat that had loved me so much as a teenager. She looked much older, as did I. She remembered me... and it touched my very soul.

It took about a week to settle my Mom's estate, and it was like that cat and I were both teenagers again. She insisted on sleeping on my chest (although it was much harder for her to climb up on the bed), and still growl at every little noise. She would worm her way between me and my (now) wife and growl as if to say "my companion has come home, and you can't have him".

Ziggy passed away from kitty cancer about 2 months after I settled my Mother's estate. Even to this day as I drift off to sleep, I can almost feel that little black cat watching over me for the things that go bump in the night.
