Church tithes are claimed as an itemized charitable contribution deduction on Schedule A (Form 1040).

The only time it's worthwhile to itemize your deductions are if the total of ALL of your deductions (medical, state income taxes, property taxes, mortgage interest, charitable contributions, miscellaneous deductions) is greater than your standard deduction. And for some items, like medical and job related expenses, only certain percentages are itemizeable.

The standard deduction is based on your tax filing status (single, married, head of household, etc.).

Contributions to a charity go on the Schedule A (Itemized Deductions). Schedule A goes with the 1040 long form.

Unfortunately, if you don't itemize, you don't get to deduct your contributions.
