I have attended several churches...why does the pastor/preacher only read on or two verses in the bible and close the bible and then spend the rest of his time talking about something that barely relates to the one or two verses he read? Why not actually teach what is in the book...would that be so hard??

Because the bible is completely messed up and people who have a brain are catching on. I mean if you literally focused on the bible all the time then nobody would believe in God anymore

april : The church, which I attend, does expound what is written within the pages of the Bible. Remember though, that a sermon is not necessarily, a Bible Study. The Bible is also, for correction in Christian instruction and righteousness. Sometimes, certain scriptures are vague ( especially when the old King James language is read ) and requires elaboration to make it more applicable to the terminology of today's world and age. The Holy Bible is an unique Book, in that it is written, via the inspiration from the Holy Spirit of God and not just the collective ideas nor thoughts of mere humans; ( otherwise, we would be better off listening to university or college professors ), instead. The Bible spans the past - present - and the future, as absolute in their fulfilment - GUARANTEED ... no other book can make claim to that !

I would like to encourage you to attend a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. All our meetings are centered around the bible.
There is a public talk based on the bible usually on either Saturday or Sunday. One night during the week we hold a Ministry School and Sevice Meeting on the same night. All bible based.
On another day we hold a weekly bible study based on the scriptrures.
For the next year and a half we are going to be studying the complete book of Revelation. Verse by verse. We have a book, Revelation, that explains the bible book of Revelations. accompanied by your own personal bible you will be able to make since of the Bible book of Revelation.
You can find a Kingdom Hall near you by looking in your phone book under Jehovah's Witnesses. Or go to the Web site www.watchtower.org and fill in the info. on that page and one of Jehovah's Witnesses in your area will get in touch with you.
You will be warmly welcomed and no you won't be swarmed over to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. That is your choice to make.
Regardless what many say and think we don't try and convert anybody. What we do offer though is free home bible studies and ones are encouraged to use there own personal bibles.

You're going to the wrong churches. At my church, my pastor does read from the Bible, and then he actually preaches or teaches the Bible. Find a good, independent, fundamental Baptist church if you want the word of God. At my old church, not a Baptist one, the preacher would do that. I have learned soo much more about God, the Bible and my salvation in the past 16 months I've been here than in the 5 yrs at my old one. God Bless

Most people don't know the Bible anymore and pastors are under the delusion that the Bible is "boring" or "out of date" or "just a bunch of stories"
Here's a theory for you, it all began 150yrs ago when Christians added "millions of years" to the Bible. Which is why evolution is so popular today because of the church. That caused people to think, "huh then God's word isn't really literal it must not be trustworthy."
Then enter Sunday school where kids learn "Bible stories" instead of teaching kids this is God's word, we say here are some nice "stories" for you to read. The Bible gets the same kind of rep as Grimm's fairy tales in school.
Plus I think that most of the time a pastor doesn't preach from the word its because he doesn't like what it says. He'd rather her his own voice than God's.

Being a minister, many ministers do not spend more time explaining the Bible because they don't know it themselves. There's a saying, "you can only lead someone as far as you are yourself."

Reading one or two verses and then telling jokes or stories the rest of the time is entertainment.

I can tell you of a Bible preaching and practicing church, email me if you want to know more.

Church is not only meant for hardcore Bible research. Not the Sunday morning service, anyway. If you want that, join a study, I bet they have some at your church. Church is also for worship and fellowship with other believers.
When you go into church Sunday morning I would suggest that you look through the bullitin, see what scripture is being looked at, read it for yourself and pray over it so that you will get as much out of it as you can. Also pray for the pastor so that his message comes across in a way that is relevent to God's word.

I am a member of the church of Christ. Our preacher bases his sermons from a few verses, and he does read those verses. The churches I have been a part of, do teach extensively from the Bible.

Could be because he's been studying the Bible all his life and he's a teacher. Anyone can just read the Bible word for word. It's like when you go to school. How would you feel if the teacher only read from the text book?

Try attending a Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. They constantly use the Bible and everyone in attendance is encouraged to bring and use their own and follow along--whatever translation they prefer.
