I had a friends tell me to used finely shredded newspaper (Not colored newspaper, just the black and white sheets) as kitty litter in place of the store bought kind. She said it was a good way to recycle, and it absorbs the moisture as well as the store bought litter. My question is... Is it safe for cats to use newspaper? I am all about recycling (and saving money!), but I dont want to try it if it is gonna be harmful to my cats. TIA!

It is not harmful. Doesn't smell very good, and really does not absorb much, but it is not harmful.

Use Cat Litter. Shredded newspaper is great if your cat has had surgery on the stomach was spayed or neutered. It helps to prevent infections. But it must be cleaned daily at least once. Cat Litter doesn't smell as bad because you can get sented or add baking soda which cuts back on smells and you can get the scoopable stuff so you just lift the pee out in a solid mass and therefore lasts longer than regular Cat Litter so is more environmentally friendly. And at a $1.50 a day for a newspaper, Newspaper is more expensive.

When I had a cat a few years ago delawed, I know, I'll never do that again, I had to use newspaper instead of litter so it wouldn't get stuck in the sutures and cause an infection. I guess you could use it all the time, but it's messy and doesn't absorb odor. Newsprint has a way of rubbing off or transferring when wet and when dry;just rub your fingers across a newspaper and see what comes off. I really don't believe that the ink is good for the cat. When in doubt, ask a veterinarian.

You can use newspaper. Actually, vets recommend using that for a few days if a cat has been declawed - so of course it doesn't hurt the cat. If you do decide to go the route of yesterday's news, maybe you could put some Arm & Hammer in the bottom of the box to absorb some of the smell.

It is safe, although it smells quickly and it is messy.

I use the feline pine stuff that is made out of recycled pine shavings and its completely biodegradable.

Ultimately the choice is yours (well and your cat's because some wont use newspaper)
