I have two male dogs, one a year and a half old and the other is one year old. Both are fixed. They are constantly humping each other. How do I get them to stop? I don't think it is a dominance issue - neither of them really show any other dominance related behavior. Both were fixed at an early age. Is this just a phase?

unfortunately some dogs do it their whole lives whether they are fixed or not. my suggestion is get a water bottle and squirt them when they start. Some dogs do like the squirt bottle so if thats the case try shaking a metal can with coins in it. Hopefully one of those two things will deter them. Good luck!!

my vet said when my dogs do that (one male one female - both fixed), it's a dominance thing and nothing sexual. this was proven when my female kept humping all her toys! (like - this is mine, and this is mine, and). i didn't even know females humped - but she goes to town on her stuffed piggy or any other toy that was hers before #2 came along. They are the same age difference as yours.

even though the dogs are fixed they ar still going to go through the motions regardless if they can make puppies or not. many dogs do this and even female dogs tend to hump things. most times its just a phase but then other dogs just tend to keep doing it unless you seperate them for awhile.

I don't know if there is anyway you can get the dogs to stop this behaviour. They hump each other to show the other one who is the boss. It is one of the ways that they know their place in order of importance in their animal world.

We had two fixed males that did the same thing. But in our case we were fortunate enough that they had the manners to save it for special occasions--like when we had company over.

We just just let the boys be boys and joked about them needing to get a room. Making a big fuss about it isn't going to stop it.

It is a dominance issue and they won't stop. I was told by my vet that females will do this to males and males to males. They won't hurt each other but it probably won't stop either.

Watch them while they play. When they show signs of Humping use a watergun to get their attention and do a lot of yelling Noo, NO NOOOO BAD NO. It won't stop the problem but it may deter it a bit. I have a female who tries to hump the cat just before she has a seizure and this can be quite disturbing. I just calmly lead her away.

It usually is a dominance issue.....have you just recently got one...perhaps that is the reason..and the new one must try and prove his dominance...

Every time they ... um..... start, spritz them in the face with water. You can get those little spray bottles at CVS for like... 99cents. They should associate that with their acts and stop. They don't like that.

get them away from each other, put one in another room from the other. Wait.. How do you know they are both male, maybe they are female and a male... You'll be expecting puppies soon...But seriously, just seperate them!
