Now that he's Buddhist, it doesn't apply. Vastly different belief system. No external god to do the saving. Complete control over his own happiness.

I also became a Buddhist. I have to ask the question "Saved from what?" Buddhism is about opening our mind to possibilities and not about doctrine and dogma. I suppose I have been saved from that.

what is 'saved'?
I believe religion is about finding faith and finding people that have the same belief- about afterlife, the journey of life and others. It isnt about being saved. Only an individual person or friend or stranger on this earth can save someone- from drowning, from killing themselves, for drug addiction. People join some religions coz of fear of death and thats not a problem but christianity helps with this and promises u a better place "HEAVEN".
Thats my opinion. But to answer i believe that ur friend has saved himself by finding him self in a religion that he feels more comforted and himself in. To help guide him through life on a peaceful journey and prepare him for after death.- Not that anyone really knows what happens but im sure ur friend is happy and he is doing the right thing for himself.

Someone in a situation you described was a church goer, a Sunday morning pew-warmer only; a nominal Christian, but not someone who ever experienced the new life from above. We are "New creatures in Christ" when we get saved, and anyone who truly experienced Jesus receives the Holy Spirit, and one of the things the Holy Spirit does, is guard you from doctrinal error, and CERTAINLY from cults. I do NOT believe that someone who professed Jesus could suddenly trip and fall and accidentally believe a lie and become involved in a cult or get indoctrinated in eastern mysticism. NO WAY! The same God that keeps me from error keeps ALL Christians from error. (And God is NOT a respecter of persons)!

Think about this. How will someone that does not believe in Jesus the Son of God be saved? God's first commandment was to have NO other God's before me. He could repent and come back to his Christian faith and ask for forgiveness and my faith teaches me God would forgive him if he is sincere. Only God knows his heart. But the Kingdom of God is for those that believe in Jesus Christ the "only" Son of God and is God. This is my faith and not necessarily that of others. I believe God judges each of us based on our own personal faith because he is the only one that knows our heart.

That's up to God.
He has given up desires, he does his duties to get good Karma, I personally see nothing wrong with that, buddhists have great spirituality too. I think he is saved, but it's not my place to judge.

The BIble says that once you believed, you were sealed with the holy Seal of promise til the da of redemption (In Ephesians). I would call this person a wayward son and pray he returns.
