Hello. I just adopted a 3 year old purebred standard Dachshund female from a free classified ads website. I adopted her on January 11th, 2007. I do want to breed her and have a purebred Dachshund male as well. I thought that my male Dachshund, Monty, would show some interest in Ashley right away. However, when he first seen her he looked at her like she's an intruder and barked. Monty's an outdoor dog and she's an indoor dog by the way. She took off running back toward the screen door and would not go near him.

We get along great. As a matter of fact, I get along better with Ashley than with Monty. She's always by my side and always is bouncing off the walls with happiness when I walk in through the front door.

I'm not sure why Monty is not showing any interest in her. I thought because she's female he'd want to mate with her right away. Or is it only when she's in heat? Or is it possible that if she's already pregnant that that's why he's not interested in her?

Why are you even breeding the dogs? By your question, I judge that you have no experience in the practice, and the world doesn't need any more shoddily-bred dogs, purebred or not. Have you had the dogs genetically and conformationally tested? Have you seriously considered their compatibility in regard to improvement of the breed? Are you taking painstaking care to ensure that dachshund-typical diseases will not be passed on? Please consider spaying and neutering your animals.

Monty is jealous. Specially since you are giving all your love and attention to Ashley. You need to love him too and show it. Why is he outside and Ashley inside? You should treat Monty better or find him another home.

Keep trying to introduce them...maybe feed them together. They will probably catch on and learn to like each other. Usually dogs are attracted to each other when the female in is estrus (heat). When the female comes into heat, she will be crabby with him until the very day when her receptivity is high, and then they won't be able to get enough of each other. Be patient, Rome wasn't built in a day, you know.

I might not like her either since he was the only one for a period of time. She is on his turf. Luckily he is not attacking her.
Not every male dog likes every female dog.

Plus is that fair to him by letting her stay inside and him out.

duh....

or is this a trick question to see how everyone would answer???

You really shouldn't have one dog inside and one dog outside anyway. I think that leaving dogs outside is animal cruelty. Shame on you!

im not a dog expert but i think that like many people say,
dogs may be more like humans than we think
if someone just tried to make me like someone it would be likely to work
maybe they just need time
whatever happens best of luck to you
