throw the dome caps away. either end of your opticle cable is the same. make sure u tell both systems you r connecting you want the digital sound.

Assuming you are plugging it into an AV receiver, check the manual on your AV receiver. Many receivers have a digital setup menu. In that menu you have to select the input you are using (CD, DVD, TV, etc.) and assign one of the digital inputs to it (Coax or Toslink). Most of the time, the digital inputs aren't hard wired to one particular input but must be assigned. A lot of receivers default to the RCA left and right analog input unless you tell it differently. This gives you flexibility in setup...but you do have to make sure to follow this step or your receiver doesn't know you have the unit plugged into the Toslink.

obviously, the male wire goes into the female wire. My guess is there's a kink in the cord, its not properly attached, or the cord is too long,

My guess is that your TosLink port is not enabled on your AV receiver because you are not on the appropriate mode.

If you are on the right mode on your AV receiver, your Toslink port will be lit. That is how you know the port is enabled.
