I am 19 years old, 5'2" and 103lbs and I cannot seem to gain weight. I don't have an eating disorder and I have recently went to the doctor about it, had tests done to check for hyperthyroidism, etc. and all tests have come back negative. No health problem cause could be found. Everybody laughs at me and tells me to wait until after I pop out a couple kids. But I don't plan on having kids any time soon and I don't want to wait that long. I really want to gain weight.

Can females take those weight gain powders and/or protein bars and do those powders and bars really work? Would lifting weights(starting off with small, maybe 5 or 10 pound) weights help? I don't know who else to ask about this since nearly everybody I know seems to have the total opposite problem than I have in regards to weight.

Thanks in advance for your answer. :-)

Ps. Eating a lot of junk food doesn't help me gain weight.

Eat more complex carbs (oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice) and drink lots of water. Eat more protein. Take about 2 tablespoons of flax oil a night. Work out. You'll gain weight in a healthy way.

I don't really know pounds, but your weight seems normal for your height. I'm 5'4" and weight about 110 (I think), and I'm normal.

You're only 19, so your body will change abit. You can indeed start lifting weight. I had calves for the first time at 19 after I worked in a youth hostel: I was a cleaner, and had to take care of 4 floors, so I was constantly walking up and down the stairs for 3 months. Same for your arms: a bit of weight lifting will give them shape. Same with bum: biking is great to make it look round (above all if you bike standing up once in a while - you know, like when cyclists go up hills). Biking will also be helpful for your legs. But for legs and bum, if you don't like biking (although it's also good for your heart), I'm sure you'll find machines at the gym that are just as effective. But if you can't go to the gym, biking is definitely effective.

Don't eat junk food as you'll just put on fat.

Kittie, this is just a guess but sometimes weight gain is difficult because of a rapid metabolism. That is, your body is burning calories as fast as you feed it. But issues regarding how your body functions are best discussed within your doctor, not this place. Talk to the doc about your metabolism, ask about pills, exercise, special foods. If nothing works, perhaps it is best to simply live with it. Develop your body as it is, making it work for you the way you want it to. After all, the body is only a small part of you. Consider working on the rest of you, the inner Kittie. Good luck.

Yes you can use weight gainers and protein powders and such. Lifting weights would definitely help! If you go to the store and buy the March issue of Oxygen you'll find a story about a lady in your position too!
