I havn't been to church in years, like since I was 8. I'm 42 now and decided to start back up. I don't think I ever really noticed the silver back then but now when I put my hand in the water it was loaded with silver particles on the bottom of the bowl. I didn't want to ask people in church, I feel a little weird for my age to do that. Thanks.

Well, this may not be the answer that you want, but i use silver to bless water, silver is regarded as a "pure"metal by most Pagans, and it is believed that it holds magical energy better than most other metals.

as for why a church would use silver shavings is beyond me. unless it is a tradition that may be old enough to have been influenced by new Pagan converts. such as Catholic.

Churches do not put silver shavings in holy water. Holy water is blessed by a priest, and the Catholic Church has never had a ritual in which silver shavings were added to holy water. The priest does add a bit of salt to the water he is blessing--but that's it.

What you are experiencing could be best defined as "grunge" in the water from the holy water font not being cleaned out periodically. A lot of people dipping fingers (not always immaculately clean fingers, by the way) into the same water will produce an unhealthy soup over time.

You could mention to the priest what you are experiencing. He will then, hopefully, clean out the font.

silver has cleaning abilities when put in water...that is true...and this is another proof that churches has been keeping technology for themselves, unwilling to contribute to mankinds progress
