There are plenty of video editors out there- just depends on what exactly you are doing with the videos- like are these just clips around the home or are you thinking about producing a serious full length movie here. As for quality, I think the best quality with the best compression ratio is mpeg-4 now. Windows Movie Maker uses .wmv I think. Try to find a program that features the mpeg-4 file format. Wikipedia has a nice list of programs, ranging in shareware to real deal programs like Apple's Final Cut Pro, which sells for $999. The link is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_editing_software.

Well, I'll give you two scenarios:

1. The issue may lie with your export settings. If you take a video (I get the feeling you're working with downloaded videos...which are already compressed to begin) with a res of 320x240, 29.97 fps, and 2mbps bit-rate (although for downloads, the bit-rate really tends to be variable) and export it as video with a res of 640x480, 24 fps and 512kbps bit-rate, you've just reduced the quality to like a *third* of it's original luster! Solution: check the properties of both your original video and your target (export) video settings and try to match them both up as best as you can.

2. Okay, what does WMM have? Non-linear editing, can add titles, a second audio channel, transitions, video effects, import video and stills....and most importantly, it's FREE!! Want another app with *all* of those specifications (okay, not 100% sure on the "stills" thing)? Avid DV Free, which is available to download from here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=Avid_Free_DV

Good Luck!
