Because classifying them as a disease means no one has to take any responsibility for their OWN actions of putting a drink or food in their mouth.

It seems like you have an idea that a condition is something less than a disease?

Alcoholism and obesity impact bodily systems and they get worse over time. Therefore the disease has a 'process'. By the way they are not easily corrected. If they were we would have no fat or drunk people.

Epilepsy is caused by the brain, but unless you have a strange sort, it doesn't worsen over time. There is no 'process' therefore it is a condition. Doesn't make it any less serious or important. Epilepsy can be well managed by drugs and in some cases brain surgery. Alcoholism and obesity aren't managed well or easily.

Does that help you calm down? OR if you want to infuriate yourself more, we in the profession also use the term "syndrome'' too instead of disease.

I am assuming something happened to bring about this question?

I don't know about epilepsy, or what distinguishes a disease from a condition. I don't even know if the distinctions mean much of anything. However, neither alcoholism nor obesity are "easily" corrected, quite the contrary. They are also epidemic in this country, and both destroy people's lives and families. Both are often, if not usually, fatal.

Perhaps your some poor sorry excuse who doesn't get attention, so he acts out through various acts of stupidity like posing questions that cause people to respond but I will say one thing, I always watch what I say because you never actually know what your future holds, so be very careful, one of your family members, could be a closeted druggie/drunk and you have never known due to their own shame, or your future child could become addicted to something, TRUTH BE KNOWN YOU NEVER KNOW

While you may think you have impressed me and some other individuals with your brainpower to try to conclude all this "disease phenomenon" on your own, you haven't, you have simply reminded me that ignorance is truly bliss and one size doesn't fit most, the only disease you should be discussing is that of your mouth. Ignorance is a disease that cant be cured. So there you have you sought a reaction thus you received one

I guess the obvious is that you have never ever suffered from an addiction. Alcoholism, and drug addiction can ABSOLUTLY DESTROY PEOPLES LIVES AND FAMILIES.
Addiction is a dependence on a behavior or substance that a person is powerless to stop. Addiction has been extended, however, to include mood-altering behaviors or activities.
Addiction is one of the most costly PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEMS in the U.S.
Causes and symptoms:
Drug chemistry: Some substances are more addictive than others, either because they produce a rapid and intense change in mood; or because they produce painful withdrawal symptoms when stopped suddenly.
Genetic factor: some people appear to be more vulnerable to addiction because of their body chemistry increases their sensitivity to drugs.
Brain structure and function: Using drugs repeatedly over time changes brain structure and fuction in fundamental and long lasting ways. Addiction comes about through an array of changes in the brain and strengthening of new memory connections.

I totally agree with susie q. What the heck is a desease? Hello, it's spelled "Disease" lmao

I think you need to look at the facts before leaving a rude, ignorant comment mentioning that alcoholism and obesity is not a disease. Please read up on the facts before you leave stupid comments like this. Someone I am very close to suffers from Alcoholism. It most certainly is a disease and a very sad one at that. Why don't you go to your local library and educate yourself.

Alcoholism and obesity is just as much of a disease as any other disease. People who are addicted to alcohol or food are just as difficult to cure as someone with cancer but in a completely different way. The only difference is that alcoholism and obesity are emotional diseases, and this can make them even harder to cure and recover from.
