Been there. Tomato juice doesn't work -- it just stains your dog's coat orange (I made this mistake when this happened to one of my dogs -- a white Great Pyr. mix -- a number of years ago). When it happened to me, I was in a panic and grabbed some tomato juice (having heard all of the myths for years), but it didn't really help at all. Then we tried a vinegar water mixture, which cut the smell a little bit. This all happened very late at night, but the next day, we ended up buying some of those expensive "skunk begone" solutions at the pet-store (the one that worked best for us was in a smallish bottle and it was rather expensive -- like $12 a bottle -- not very economical for a large dog). The anti-skunk solutions worked *reasonably* well, but our dog still carried a skunky odor, particularly when she would get wet or damp.
Finally, someone suggested Dawn dishwashing liquid (or probably any other good "grease cutting" dishwashing liquid -- make sure that it has that grease cutting action, though). We diluted it with water, so as not to irritate her skin, but that REALLY did the trick -- much, much more effective than all of the expensive bottled remedies we had tried. I have since seen a "recipe" for an anti-skunk solution that uses Dawn dishwashing liquid (the skunk smell is sprayed in an oil, so you need to cut that oil to get rid of the stink). Someone on the board already offered up a similar Dawn-based recipe; I'm not sure whether or not this is the one that I have seen. I might be hesitant about using too much peroxide (I would think that it could discolor your dog's coat?) -- and, of course, you'll want to dilute anything so as not to irritate your dog's skin. Good luck -- I don't envy you!

Bathing him in tomato juice is the best way to get rid of skunk smell. I would suggest contacting your vet to see if there are other products you could use, as labs are very prone to skin allergies, so you wouldn't want to cause one problem when you try to fix another. Good luck!

Check this out...
Here is the secret recipe that WORKS. Mix the following:
1 quart 3 percent hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
1 teaspoon liquid soap or dish detergent
Mix these together and bathe ("shampoo" in or rub down) the spray victim thoroughly.
Be sure to use this mixture immediately after it is created, as it is unstable.
Rinse with tap water afterward, and repeat if necessary.
For spray in the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible.

You can mix a deodorizing shampoo with household products. Mix equal parts of Baking Soda, peroxide and Dawn dishsoap. First put the baking soda, then add peroxide. Let the soda dissolve before adding Dawn. Shampoo your dog with it, letting it soak for a couple of minutes.Rinse and towel dry.
