It's probably ethics/modern. Meaning - not good old ethical behavior, but the making of excuses for less than ethical thought and behavior.
Does this make any sense at all? I know what I want to say - just having trouble expressing it. Kind of like "I can cheat on my wife because everybody else is doing it."
