Never apply to a bar without knowing what kind of place you're getting into. Go over there the night before hand and sip a Martini or something like that all night. Get to know the atmosphere of the bar prior to asking for a job. Not only does this introduce you to the staff, you get to see the clientele, what kind of liquor is present and how the place is run. I walked in blind to a biker bar once and almost died when I bluntly turned down a line of cocaine on the bar.

Also, check the lighting over and around the bar itself as well as visibility from outside. If you can clearly see the bar while walking by outside, it's a nice little place. Not saying a place with dark windows is bad or anything but just something to mentally keep in the back of your mind.

Good luck.
