I am currently an army reservist. In basic training(8 months ago) i dislocated my shoulder and was taken to the ER for relocation. At the time an option to see a med board for medical discharge was presented to me but i opted to continue training. 8 months later i am having a lot of dislocations and pain in that same shoulder. Is it possible to get a medical discharge now? I tried to see the va but was told that without a discharge that i was ineligable to be seen. What is the first step to a medical discharge, How long is the process and will my shoulder be covered if major sergery is nessasary? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I have no medical insurance and im in a lot of pain. i am triing to get this taken care of as soon as possible.

A medical discharge for your info takes a long time. I got an honorable discharge from the Army in 2003 but had to go through a medical eval board that took a 1 1/2 for schizophrenia and a bad back.

Simple:

pick up the phone: call the local:
Disabled American veterans, at the city where the VA center in your state is located.

ask to speak to a NSO "National Service Officer"

The DAV also helps active duty, Reserves and Guard with any medical issues.

or email me

As long as your injury is documented, you can get whats called a Line Of duty Injury. This will provide coverage for that injury only. You can the approach the VA, and ask them for a reords review of you situation. you will have to provide them with orders, and Dr's noted on the injury. It may not get you medically diacharged, but it may get you partial disability which will cover medical costs, but may also limit the jobs in the service you are able to do...

First, you will need to see a military doctor and convince him that your shoulder is unable to be repaired. If you do this, the doctor will refer you to a medical board on limited duty. You may spend about 3-6 months waiting on a PEB board to convene your case. If it is determined that you can not be fixed, they may elect to discharge you. You will NOT be medically retired. If you are on active duty, why do you need medical insurance? It's not worth trying to get out on a shoulder injury. I suggest you stay put.

I'm reservist also. Have you tried to take this issue up with your commanding officer? I know that on drill weekend if you get hurt they cannot deny you to go to the hospital. And they will have to pay for it too. Check into this at your unit. I would suggest to go up the chain of command-start with your NCOIC(NCO in charge) They should be able to direct you from their! I hope you get better soon!
