I was just curious as to what people have experienced with their child(ren) going to a traditional elementry school as well as year round school. I attended traditional so I'm leaning that way, but I want to make a good decision for my daughter not based solely on nostalgia.

My school follwed a "traditional" calendar. (Heck...back then it was really the only calendar schools followed!)

Anyway, my kids are in schools that follow a year-round calendar. I really like it.

Basically, they go 9 weeks on and 3 weeks off. They start in mid-late July and go 9 weeks. Then they get a 3 week fall intersession break. Then they go about another 9 weeks prior to the winter break. They get 2 weeks off for winter holiday break. Then 9 more weeks followed by a 3 week spring intersession break. Then 9 more weeks with school ending around the first of June. They have 5-6 weeks off in the summer.

This calendar means that there is less "lost" knowledge over summer break. That means less time spent reviewing at the start of the school year. Because they get vacations more often than the traditional calendar students, they are less likely to burn out or tune out in school. It's easier to do stuff on their vacations since they aren't off the same time everyone else in the world is on vacation. Fall/spring intersession breaks are relaxed since they are 3 full weeks instead of just one. Summer break is good because, since it's shorter than a traditional sumer break, they go back to school before I am ready to lock them out of the house for driving me nuts. (Just kidding!)

I would say Year round is great IF there is a parent at home. I don't see how a working parent can take all that time off every 8-9 weeks.

Both of my nieces went to year round school and loved it. They didn't get as bored during the "off" time and they were able to retain more of what they had learned the semester prior and there wasn't as much "review" of the previous year in the beginning of the new school year.

i'm against year around training because of the NCLB regulation. the colleges have the opt to make their money from NCLB so they % the youngsters at college all year to establish they bypass the state exams. the better the try scores, the greater money the college makes. in the event that they are out for the summer season they are going to forget what they found out. If i'm not improper, year around college did not initiate till this NCLB crap started.
