how do I remove the metal hangers that hold the gridwork in dropped ceiling?

untwist the wire or cut them with a pair of sidecutters if your are trying to disconnect the grid. Look where the peices intersect you will see a small metal tab, bend that tap in with a knife blade...

take down the panels first--then you should find wires attached to the ceiling joist--cut the wires which will undo the middle hangers--but the hangers on the peremiter will be nailed or screwed to the wall
