I'm referring to the drug in Aldous Huxley's sci-fi novel "Brave New World" a drug taken to escape pain and bad memories through hallucinatory fantasies. There actually is a drug marketed as Soma (I work in a pharmacy) but it's a sleeping pill. Same difference, I guess.

ok, ljo... um, pharmacist dude - you're right, Soma may indeed be marketed as a muscle-relaxant - but for example a drug like lorazepam acts as a muscle-relaxant as well and is used to treat both anxiety and insominia. Soma can certainly be used as a sleep aid beacuse any muscle-relaxant will cause drowsiness. It's not a very popular drug (in fact I think it's off the market) but the one time I saw it prescribed it was as a sleeping aid, so that's what stuck in my mind. There are some drugs specifically tailored for insomnia, such as Immovane, but as you know, drugs are often prescribed for more than one condition. Technically you're right though so I apologize for my lapse in memory. I'm only a lowly technician so perhaps this would explain it! Instead of nit-picking, maybe next time you should try to answer the question. Ah, but that's what pharmacists do best! Nit-pick!

Probably. Huxley saw the writing on the wall long ago - and if you look at society today - isn't everything that's marketed to us really just an escape from the things that cause us pain - both physically and emotionally - and create an alternate reality with its rules we follow like a fantasy (fashion, television, movies, music, sports, cars, - live longer, look younger, be more energetic - no depression - fads - etc . . . so forth and so on)?F' it - just gimme the freakin soma - and a rum and coke with a twist of lime please ;-).

Geez, I had to look up THAT be conscious. LOL. i do no longer think of that maximum women human beings choose this form of drug. in line with danger some do, those with very low libidos in the 1st place. All i understand is that in case you asked me if Levitra (a version of Viagra) works, you may get a convincing sure, and that's all it took for us to get lower back in the swing of issues.

Too bad he didn't copyright the name or something. His descendants could probably be making big bucks. Sure, I'd try real soma.

What do you do in this Pharmacy you work in? Because Soma is a muscle relaxer!!!!!.....not a sleeping pill.
