I am not scared.
But I was robbed about a month ago. Not only did the thieves take my wallet, they saw me punch in my pin in the checkout line. . .so they proceeded to steal ALL my money from my account.
The most annoying thing is that the BANK could care less about it. Nevermind that I reported it stolen an hour after it happened. Nevermind that the bulk of my money was stolen AFTER I called. There's customer service for you.
After that I decided that the safest place for my money at the moment was under my pillow. I'm taking it all to HK next week and getting a REAL bank account.
DON'T PUT YOUR MONEY IN ICBC, THEY SUCK.

There have been many cases in GZ of people robbed by motorcycle robbers. One of my students was knocked to the ground by a guy on a bike (but he didn't manage to grab her purse). Now that they've outlawed motorcycles perhaps the situation will improve.

Living there for six years, I found China to be like anywhere here in the United States. One needs to be careful and take care, especially if you are a foreigner.

I don't think getting killed will be the worry, but being robbed or cheated is more than likely if you travel and shop in the wrong areas. In general, most Chinese are very honest, but like here, there are some bad apples that makes it hard to trust all.

Otherwise, to answer your question, "No, I am not afraid of being beaten up or robbed in China. I stayed with my family and had friends with me that provided information on those in the area I could or could not trust!"

Any demeaning language is not tolerated. If some one speaks that way, I try to imply that I do not behave that way and neither should others. High and mighty, maybe. But saying nothing is just the same as doing it. Everyone should be treated equal in general. But don't ever let someone walk all over you either. Handle it with care and talk polietly. Never be agressive or loud. But be prepared to leave an unstable situation quickly, because there are unstable people. All-be-it some temporarily from a situation and some permenantly for no forseen reason

I have been in China for now 16 months and the only thing that got stolen was my bike in fact 2 bikes at night. So that's not a big deal.

There aren't a lot of theft here. The country is quite safe for a foreigner.

As for the beaten up, I'm not afraid. Of course you can see some Chinese fighting in the street. But the only fights involving foreigners I heard of were started by a fellow French guy. He really liked to pick up some Chinese. Otherwise nothing.

No the only thing I scared of in China is for my life when I'm in a car or walking in the street or on my bike because the Chinese really don't know how to drive. they could take some extra lessons. It's really dangerous.

China is MUCH safer than here, the USA. I was in China for 3 weeks doing missionary work, walking the streets in the middle of the night, only a couple of us, middle of nowhere. Nothing happened, nor were we afraid. Pretty safe place.

I was there with my wife last November for 8 days, visiting Beijing, Xian and Shanghai.

We were scammed and robbed by bikecabs very close to downtown Beijing on our first day there, we were not beaten up just because I know personal defense. Pickpocketed at Xian. In Shanghai we were lucky, nothing happened.

BEWARE

While all countries have crime, it is much lower in China because it is a police state and the rights and liberties taken for granted elsewhere are not always granted in China...They are tougher on criminals meaning if you don't confess, they can beat it out of you.
