I want to dye my own hair. I've got the box dye, and I usually have someone else do this for me. But I'm tired of waiting for someone else to help me, I'd like to be able to dye it whenever I want. Any suggestions on the easiest way to do this? I have semi-long, semi-thick hair.

I don't need to test the color, I already have someone else do this for me. Basically I'm saying I have to dye it by myself, and what's the easiest way? Back of head first? Front? Roots???

Before I got my hair cut, my hair was bra-strap length and I colour my own hair all the time. I'm not sure - are you touching up roots?

I divide my hair into 4 sections, parting it down the middle. If hair is thick, you might like to make more sections. I use plastic claw-clips to keep the sections out of the way. Depending on the instructions, you might also need to wet your hair first.

When I touch up my roots, I start from the back and move towards the front, section by section. I find the easiest way to apply the colour is to do a combination of squirting onto hair with the nozzle of the bottle, OR placing an amount of colour into a gloved hand then applying to hair. For doing roots, you just restrict your application to the re-growth and don't worry about the ends until later. You don't need to worry about being too accurate - as long as the un-coloured hair is covered with product, it's fine. Do make sure you follow your instructions for the timing of it all!

Pay attention to the hairline at the front and your part. This is where missed bits are most evident!

Don't panic too much if you feel you're taking too long with application. Modern at-home hair colours are designed to stop developing after a certain time. Just start timing when you've finished applying.

If your hair smells stinky after you have rinsed - try half a cup of vinegar with half a cup of water and rinse with this - it will take the smell away. Be sure to condition well afterwards. HTH

Do it in sections. Part your hair 4 ways and begin back to front. If you happen to take too long coloring sections because your new at it, doing it back to front works well. That way if you take a little longer and 1/2 your hair is darker than the other no one will notice that much. Oh and just in case- nail polish remover works wonders at getting stains off your skin. :) Happy Coloring!

Try going over it the same way the person that does it for you does. A little tip however, you might want to consider the "vaseline trick". All you do is put a very thin layer around the edges of your face, ears, and neck, then you won't have dark blotches or white spots on your skin to get rid of. BELIEVE ME, it saves A LOT of trouble!
ALSO, don't forget to be nice to your hair, maybe get a hot oil treatment to soothe it 2 days after coloring, your brush will thank you for it!

start doing it as anyone else would usually do it, a strip at a time then as you get towards the end of doing that use it more as like a shampoo, as you are bound to have missed some bits. you couldnt see or get. ok now ive read additional details, start with the back of your head first as its got the longest bits and is harder to reach.

Basically, you squeeze color out of the applicator bottle and distribute all over. It's easier to start from the roots and work your way to the ends.

section hair into many different sections. Start one section and with the end of the comb color one layer...and the next...make sure you cover everything! Can't miss! Good luck.

All the hair color kits I've used (pretty much all brands) have easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions.
