A passport and MONEY along with clothes and personal hygene products.
I would do alot of research first to find out where you'd be happiest visiting. That's quite an ambitious Agenda, I would take one country at a time and concentrate my research there.
Have Fun!!!

If you have a job that you can easily do in other countries, the best bet is to base yourself in various parts of the world and then travel from there.
For example, if you can get a job in London, it is really easy and cheap to travel to other parts of Europe. You can spend the money you earn on travelling so better than cheap, it is free. Then move to a Kibbutz in Israel where you can easily travel through Asia. And so on...
You may look at basing yourself in England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai, Spain, Israel, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa etc.
If you are in the IT or Hospitality industry, you can really work in any country.
This is a long term travel plan where you can really see the world. I have been following this plan for almost 10 years and have been to almost 100 countries in the world. This is not even half of what is out there. It will change your life if you do things this way.
If you are just looking for a glance at some parts of the world, the best idea is to buy a 5/6 stop round the world ticket and make sure you stop in London, Istanbul, Delhi, Cape Town, Sydney and Rio.

1. You need to check VISA requirements for each country.
2. Look for cheap flights, I suggest that you use the not too popular airports to get value airlines. Example, for China, instead of going directly to Beijing, you can pass through Macau where most budget airlines depart and arrive.
3. Check for hotel or hostel rates and reservations.
4. Reseach how you can get around that particular city. You must have an idea if it's better to use the public transpo or taxis.
5. More research. Knowledge is power.
6. Stay safe!
Good luck :)

I would say get a plan or some person who is a guide to the place who has been there before. It cost money, but if you are going to travel you should have lots of money anyway. This helps to give what to do, speak the laungauge if you can't, and in case something bad were to happen like a robbing. If something REALLY bad happened and you went alone who would know for a long time? NO ONE.

having gone 3/4ths around the world by my female self since the 1970's I have learned to visit the embassy & leave a copy of my passport & travelers checkes there. I have had the best times under the worst circumstances, oh yeah NEVER carry your checks & passport together, You need one to replace the other. Get the LONLEY PLANET. It lists youth hostels, tours , warnings, all sorts of good info & don't forget the travelzoo.com for super fares on short notice

Things you will need:
LOTS of money. Just don't carry it all with you at one time.
A tourist Visa for the country you are visiting. See the respective countries' Embassy website for apps.
Avoid going anywhere where no one else knows your going. If you go off with a stranger, write down the info and leave it with someone.
Some self-defense lessons would hurt, either.
