I have a 4 year old daughter and a springer spaniel.
The dog is hyper - he is very clever, loving, gentle but sometimes clumsy - he needs lots of exercise and something to work his mind.

Have never heard reports of a springer being aggressive with children but as with all dogs the interaction between child and dog should be watched.

Lovely family pets.

Springers are generally great with kids. You need to be careful though that you don't get a puppy from a line of field spaniels as they'll be much more hyper, very high energy level, and will need a lot more exercise, as well as a job to do than dogs that come from a show line. Also, welsh springers tend to be a little more manageable than english springer spaniels.

I have owned two Springer Spaniels in the past; they are lovely dogs but do need a lot of attention and exercise. They are bred to be working dogs however as long as they have plenty of exercise and things to keep their mind occupied then you shouldn't have any problems with children. When introducing dog and child make sure it is a calm setting, ensure the child knows not to shout or be rough with the dog - let them get to know each other and as the pup grows up you will probably find they will be good friends. Involve your child as much as possible with things like feeding and walking the dog so they grow up knowing what a responsibility (and how rewarding) having a happy, healthy pet can be.

Springers are good with children but with any dog as long as there brang up with them and the children are taught to respect the dog.Springers are gundogs and have endless energy, they are very boistrous in young age and need at least an hours free run exercise 2/3times a day. They are very affectionate and are quite easy to train, there willing to please which makes training easier, they love food and if allowed can become overweight very quickly but again training is made easier with reward based methods.A walking friend of mine who has a 6yr old springer said that they are a challenge when young and this particular dog during young age was a constant theif and always seeking out dead animals which he would not give up either. As long as you have the energy and time to train and socialise a springer then they will make a great addition to your family.Good luck.

ANY dog is good with children if the children are good with it and not allowed to disturb it when it is eating or sleeping, and not allowed to pull it about etc. Springers are very active working dogs which need some professional coat care and lots and lots of excersize.
JaneD. There are no solid or red springers. They come in liver and white or black and white.
I think you are getting confused with cockeres, yet once again you are confused. You are referring to cocker rage syndrome in poorly bred specimins.Incidentally this syndrome also occurs in golden retrivers and dachshunds. It is not common, not in well bred cockers, they do not "go mad".
Honestly, if you don't know what you are talking about, it's best not to say anything as you will make yourself look silly.

Springer spaniels are a 'gun' dog, they were bred for retrieving birds etc that were shot. As such they are described as having a 'soft' mouth & are generally very gentle. I had a springer/cocker spaniel cross & it was the most tolerant & gentle dog with kids I have ever met.Whilst I wouldnt tolerate or allow kids to be deliberately hurtful to an animal sometimes they can be without realising. With my spaniel cross I never had to worry about him snapping at kids. He was adorable as most spaniels are

bypass with the Springer. it is stressful to discover a Cocker with a solid temperament, not to show one with any variety of searching instinct. determine the canines you %. is from searching strains, and you have got a large significant different. each of those I even have ever met have been fairly common to coach, yet necessary assorted exercising.

a word of advice tho, do not get the solid coloured ones ie black or red, because they have a genetic disposition to going mad.

this is mentioned in some books, but beware because they might become agressive and do damage.

speaking from personal experience and knowing people who had those types.

I believe they're good with kids. My mum says they're prone to ear infections though coz of their long flappy ears which also go in their food a lot!
