38 mph is the average top end speed for a Thoroughbred. However the average speed for a healthy horse is about 16 and a half miles per hour. Most horses are tested with the V200 test. A test performed when the heart beat of the horse is 200 bpm.

A top Arab race horse will hit 770 meters per minute (28.7mph), , as it hits the finish line some have done bursts of about 45 mph - but a full gallop is about 660 m/min, which works out at 18 seconds per furlong (24.6mph).

Endurance horses will run an average 14 miles per hour, 345 meters per minute.

All depends on the distance. Wikipedia claims that quarterhorses have been clocked at 63 mph, though that would just be for a few seconds, an instantaneous burst of speed. The thoroughbred would max out at about 45 mph over a quarter of a mile, maybe 50 mph over a shorter distance. Secretariat's Derby and Belmont, at 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 miles, respectively, translate to approx. 37.5 mph, and no horse alive today could match those speeds over those distances. In a race of a quarter horse against a thoroughbred, the quarter horse would outsprint the thoroughbred for a short distance (1/4 of a mile or so, not surprisingly), but the thoroughbred would blow the quarterhorse away after that. Just like a human sprinter vs. a miler.

What Lucy said isnt true, no thoroughbred has run at 50-60 m.p.h. Secretariat only ran at around 40 m.p.h and he shattered a world record.
