Cockatiels are fantastic, but they require a lot of love and affection. You can teach them to talk while they are young, and they adore singing and making up their own tunes.

Boys learn to speak easier then girls, but if you are patient and nurturing your baby girl will speak just as good as any boy.

I agree with a cockatiel being a great starting bird. Males are more apt to talk than females.

You can never grantee if a bird will talk or not, so don't have that be your biggest criteria. You should look at lifespan, special care issues, cage size, food, and toy cost. You will need to have several different toys in the cage and more to rotate in when they get bored or chewed up.

The bigger parrots are harder for a novice to handle. They can develop psychological issues if they feel they aren't being treated correctly, or don't have enough interaction. Of course you should interact with all birds, but cockatiels seem to be a little more self entertaining than the bigger birds.

Birds that talk back aren't really good starter birds. I recommend a cockatiel. They can be taught to whistle tunes, and can even emulate your phone and doorbell. Exceptionally bright ones can even speak a couple of words. This will give you an excellent start in bird care. After you've cut your teeth (so to speak) on a cockatiel, an African Gray parrot would make an excellent choice for the novice avian fancier. They talk, are extremely bright, and smaller and tamer than your average parrot.

The bird for you depends on what you can provide. Some can outlive you. They all take care and comittment. I love the Quaker parrot. Even parakeets are parrots. hand raised ones are easier to train. Breeders tend to be superior to pet shoppes and are great sources of information.Good luck on your quest.

Both parakeets and cockatiels are great. Cockateils are really smart and personable, especially if they are hand fed from birth. Look for hand fed birds and young ones. Great pals.

I recommend a parakeet (or a budgie-they are the same thing-just different names). Parakeets are small and easy to care for and you can teach them to talk, to sit on your finger, etc. My parakeet can sound like the telephone ringing, so anything is possible. Have fun!
