An informal invite means that you are having an informal event. The invites can still be pre-printed, but they will often have casual borders, casual fonts, and not have all the bells & whistles. They can be less expensive because they do not follow what a traditional invite is, meaning an invite, an inner envelope, an outer envelope, pre-printed addresses, an RSVP card, a map/info card, tissue paper, etc.
If you are ok with people showing up in shorts & flip flops, then "informal" is fine. If you want people to dress for the occasion, a little more formal makes more sense. : )

All formal invitations used to be engraved. Not so common now except those who live an elite lifestyle. There are considered formal. Most time they're still done at a prointer's & not on a computer

it's more expensive because the printers are taking advantage of you. if you wanted a formal wedding invitation, you could tell the printer that you could assemble everything. but I think an informal wedding invitation really isn't informal, it's more personal and shows both of your personalities better than an old school invitation. look up invitations by dawn they are a pretty good company but online would be the best and cheapest way to go.

Unless things have change in the last 10 years. Informal invitations are nothing more then party invitations. They can be bought at any store where they sell greeting cards. They can be bought blank and you fill in the info. yourself. That is why they are so much cheaper

casual invitations are those that are sold in card shops in packages of 10...there are really pretty designs for weddings....I've used them (from my sweet 16 to my daughter's 1st birthday) and came out great.
however, you can visit stationery stores, and websites for great, sparky ideas on formal invitations (far from classic, but are equally classy).
whichever ones you choose, enjoy!

Typically ink on paper, without the special stuff like raised images, lacey edges, gold foil, ribbons, lined envelopes.
They can still be pretty, they are just simpler.

they don't look as nice.. the paper may be a lower quality, decals like ribbons are printed instead of being real ribbons, don't have magnets -- etc

formal would be more classy and more expensive....
cheap and tacky would be informal
so I would go with someone classy and creative which does not have to be expensive...
