i had a miscarriage in 2002 i was still losing the baby after 3 days and the pain was unbearable my doctor booked my in for a scrape, i did at the time wonder why he had been reluctant to do this, in 2004 i was in for an elective ceasearean and on thumbing through my notes to pass the time i noticed that my previous pregnancy had been twins, i feel guilty now as i might have lost one and aborted the other with the scrape, was my doctor supposed to tell me that i was expecting twins , the scan was a very early scan as i had had a fall at about 6 weeks and there was two sacs showing on the scan, i feel absolutely sick this is really hurting me not knowing, am not sure about asking my doctor about it now as it was quite a while ago he might think ive lost it or he will think im after some sort of claim

i do not want a claim i want to know if id lost both my babies or if i had aborted one,, im told that twin pregnancies revert to single in the first trimester one way or another anyway so im wondering if that was what was happening to me before i had the scrape?? or was i actually losing both, nothing can mend what has happened and both my babies are gone whatever happened and a claim will not ease the pain either way

ann i do not know how you assimulate info but the umbilical cord does not detach from the fetus and many twin pregnancies have succesfully gone on to deliver the second baby after miscarriage of the first also twins never share an umbilical cord, i am so glad that circumstances since this event have hardened me no end or i would have more to say to you and probably just as upsetting as what you have just said

I doubt that a doctor would take the life of a healthy embryo without consent.
Ask him what the situation was and why he didn't tell you ?
You are entitled to know.
Congrats on the new baby.

I'm sure you will hear the same thing from your doctor as I am about to tell you. Falling at 6 weeks can not cause a miscarriage. Your uterus is still down in your pelvis and you would have to break some major bones to hurt the baby.
The reason the doctor probibly did not recommend a D/C (scrape as you called it) when you first miscarried was because it is not necessary. D/C are not 100% safe, there is a lot of risk factors involved, so unless you show signs of infection, as you said you did, there is no reason to put you at risk and do one.

When woman miscarry they have a habit of trying to blame themselves, when in reality there is nothing you could do or could have done to change the situation. 98% of miscarriages are due to genetic defects. If there were twins, there is no way you could have save the second baby by not having a D/C. Once you show signs of infections from a miscarriage, the operation must be performed of you can get septic and have your whole uterus removed or die yourself.
It sounds like a long time to ponder these questions, I really recommend you speak with your doctor, or if you don't feel you will be able to believe everything he says, get a second opinion. I also recommend you seek counseling, just to be able to go through what ever remaining emotions you may have left over from this event.
I also just wanted to let you know that although there may have been 2 sacs in an old ultra sound picture, that does not mean you had twins. It could be a cyst, your fylopian tube of just the way that the scanner was angled, please also keep that in mind.

Its quite possible that you were going to lose both. Your doctor should have explained about it being a twin pregnancy & given you the option of waiting before going through with your D&C. However it is possible that they believed you were losing or going to lose both babies anyway. I know this is upsetting but YOU did nothing wrong. Concentrate on the family you have or intend to have as you will only torture yourself. You cannot change what has happened but with your new knowledge you would be able to ask more questions if the situation ever arose again

once you start loosing a baby there was nothing the doctor could have done to save the other, you see the umbilical cord was already detached from the faetus.

you have to ask if only for your own peace of mind

but you should know that its very rare for a woman who losses on twin to carry the second for much more than a few days after

Chances are you were losing both, he same thing happened to me. One "came out" and one I had to have a D&C for, had no heartbeat.
