Normally, four would be correct, but in the information age with everyone filing electronically most companies do not send four copies. You really don't need four because the only time you will need it is if you are audited (unless you actually file on paper - and if so, why?).

So, if you only get one, you'll be okay - and that's probably what you'll get.

You receive 1 copy of the 1099 and keep it in your files. If you receive a W-2, you attach a copy to each return you file. The state an the IRS have already received copies of both from the person the sent them to you.

Does the 1096 require copies of 1099?

One for you to file with fed taxes, one to file with state taxes, one for local (city) taxes, and one for your records (4).

This is standard, but in a city and state where you don't have income tax those copies don't necessarily need to be there.
