I would recommend the Salvation Army, or other thrift shops for cheap/inexpensive things. Sometimes the thrift shops will also get rid of things, and might put it out back behind the building or by the dumpster.

For "free" or more inexpensive things, try Craig's List. People give away all kinds of stuff on there, if he is able to pick it up.

Also church groups could help with donations, and may even be able to help with food.

The alleys of southern California are the heaven for all unwanted furniture. Be sure to fumigate and disinfect before bringing it into a house. Try the beach area, people move in and out of their apartments and cottages every month and always leave stuff behind.

Good luck.

craigslist.com - stuff gets listed all the time

local thrift shops

church bazaars & garage sales (esp. community garage sales organized by the local city gov.t)

He should cruise areas where students live at the end of the school year. Students are notorious for leaving things behind when they move out of their dorms and apt.s.
