I assume that Indian roads are rough. Why would our government take care of there roads after we stole there land? Any way Subaru would be my choice. Good ground clearance all wheel drive and reliable.

Every car in India is a family car if you have a family of more than 2.

If you are looking to go on long drives packing half your home with you, then the best deal for you is the Tata Marina. The petrol is cheap and powerful but thirsty, and the diesel is economical to run but has little driving pleasure.

For most uses, a hatchback is sufficient, and the Indica Diesel Turbo and Xeta Petrol variants (the best deal in price) serve well, as also do the new Chevy UVA, the Suzuki Swift (though back seat is a little cramped and the interiors are claustrophobic) and possibly the best of the lot is the Hyundai Getz but is relatively pricey.

If your family has more than 5, and you are comfortable driving large vehicles, the best deal would be the Tata Safari, but the Mahindra Scorpio, a little pricier, offers more nimbleness and driving pleasure. Toyota Innova caps the top end of this segment, but at Rs. 9.97L may be out of your budget.

The 2 best cars 4 ind roads I feel are The scorpio and indica.
The indica has no-nonsense looks , is spacious and has good land clearence 4 all those unmarked potholes and speedbreakers(even though it has a not-so-good gearbox and engine). The new Indica should be still better . The all new scorpio looks superb even though it has a bit too much of body roll and a light sterring. It even has decent off roading talent combined with space. Both the cars also come with a cute price tag.Above all both indica and scorpio come from indian and reliable companies whom you can trust .

If you are looking at a new car, then Maruti is a good option. Wagon R is a comfortable option. If you are looking at a car that is pre-owned and gives you the power behind the wheel, then you should be looking at a SUV like scorpio or a van like Toyota.
