You should stand perfectly still, (don't show fear because they can sense it,) and if they approach you, stick your hand out slowly, in a fist, and let the dog sniff it. If it bows its head, or seems to be acting friendly (teeth not showing, eyes not staring into yours, tail waging side-to-side...,) you can slowly and cautiously start to pet it.

Never run. Never stare directly at the dog. If anything, focus your eyes on the dog's paws. Staring one down is a sure way to get a mean dog riled. In dog language, that's like calling his bluff.

Avoidance is the best defense. If there is a mean dog in the neighborhood, you would do well to avoid the house and go one street over. If this dog runs loose in the neighborhood, call the police and tell them you are afraid of the dog. The owners will be fined and the dog will be picked up as a stray.

Whatever you do, dont run! Dont look the dog in the eyes. Try to act like you are not afraid of it, or they will pick up on the fear you have, and that is worse. If you run, they will chase you. These are the main things that you should not do. Just stand still, or walk slowly away acting as though you are not afraid, which is hard to do, but thats the best thing you can do.

Dont run, and dont look them in the eye. Looking a dog in the eyes is a sign of dominamce and he will feel threatened. If he does not feel threatened and you dont run for him to chase you chances are he will go away from you.
