The plants could grow faster than plants without added sugar because of additonal energy. (Sugar can be broken down in order to be converted to energy)

it will alter the C:N ratios in the soil. this may help, or hinder, the plant's growth. it will certainly help the plant's mycorrhizal symbiote.
