I am trying to hook up my powered sub to my parents DVD player, unfortunately, the dvd player does not have a Sub output. I am thinking about splitting either the left or right channel, but I am afraid i will lose some of the bass. I know you can't tell which direction frequencies that low are coming from, which is why it would make sense that they would mix it it mono...but i am not sure, any help?

Audio in DVD movies is recorded in 5.1 Dolby Digital regardless of its frequency response. During encoding, the codec can take advantage of similarities among the channels, but a two channel audio decoder will just give you stereo.

Low bass is mixed in two different ways. There is an LFE (low frequency effects) or .1 channel which is bandwidth limited and there is are the other channels (left, center, right, surrounds, etc) which are full range signals. If the DVD does not have a dedicated LFE output, the bass will be mixed equally into the left and right channels so you would need to run both into a sub.
Assuming you have a 2 channel setup...you would want to split the output for both left and right channels, run one set into the sub, the other into your 2 channel amp.
Better yet, ditch the 2 channel amp and go to a surround speaker setup with a receiver. Far better sound and flexibility.
