Ever hear anyone say "Heavens to Betsy" or "Jumping Jeosaphat" They are English idioms, figures of speech, and "Omigod" is one too. You don't have to believe in Betsy, Joosaphat or a god to use them.

Or "Jesus Christ!" when they are mad about something.
Maybe on a 'soul level' they know they should be seeking shelter and help from God---
I'd surely rather say Oh MY GOD when I saw the headlights of the semitruck beaming in my windshield than "oh s-hit"

Culture.
Way back when, it was worse to take God's name in vain than to cuss. It's just something that survived the test of time, I guess.
