I have sympathy for all addictions except for the child porn. I am a recovering methamphetamine addicted. Its a very tough addiction to fight, I feel that all addictions are hard to fight period. There are mental reasons why people get addicted to drugs. I sure hope all of you reading this who are addicted to anything (except for the child porn) can find the will power to fight the addiction. I suggest going to your local NA classes, it helped me alot. Pretty lame I know but hey my life is way better sober then it ever was the 3 years I lived on Meth. Go get help its out there.

Because all addictions are illnesses, I can feel some sympathy for any of them.

I probably feel the least for people who've become addicted to crack or meth. The reason for this, is that it is such public knowledge that these two drugs are bad news--the worst and most dangerous drugs of all--homemade; can become addicted on first try; can kill--like, who never heard this? I still sympathize with their pain.

I probably feel the most for alcoholics, as some of us grew up in a time where everyone drank--and most to excess. When I was young, drinking was the "normal" thing to do--as was cigarette smoking, and a little weed.

I have a great deal of sympathy for those addicted to legal methadone. This is because a person can become detoxed off heroin in a matter of days--but government-made methadone has to be taken for life (in many cases). Go figure...

I also feel a lot of sympathy for those who become addicted to physician-prescribed medications (pain killers, anxiety meds, sleeping pills, diet pills, etc.) This was not their fault at all--the doctors did not devote enough time to caring about them becoming addicted--shame on them.

Gambling hits people suddenly--it starts out a fun thing to occupy time and possibly win some $--but for some, turns into hell on earth. They can lose everything that matters to them in one night (just like with some other addictions). They can become as physically and mentally ill as someone addicted to a substance. This sux for them.

Food addictions (aka overeaters AND undereaters) come from various sources. Could be in the genes--could be peer pressure--could be one's way of dealing with life and problems--could be chemical imbalance. How can anyone not have sympathy for these people?

Though it can be heartbreaking if someone you care about has one of these (or any type of addiction)--some people for safety reasons need to get away from the addict. Also, it can be very scary if you are approached on the street by a stranger who is an addict. That doesn't mean that we should think less of these people than of people suffering with any other ILLNESS--addictions can be life-threatening, and can certainly break up homes and friendships. There is not enough help for addicts--all the government wants to do is put most of them in jail--or give them some methodone (worse than the heroine, addiction wise).

Most: Food

Least: Well, I sorry for all of them really. But I guess anything that you could have not gotten started on in the first place. I mean you have to eat. So, food is a hard one for some people. But you had to go out of your way and on the edges of society to start drugs. So, I guess drugs. But I have never really known any one with that addiction so I don't know their side.

I think I have sympathy for anyone with an addiction. Addiction is a terrible thing and extremely hard to break free from. There are people who have 'addictive personalities' and lean on stuff then find it terribly hard to let go.

I do feel for their friends and families though. It must be so tough.

I find it most interesting that people still want to view these things as separate issues. Addiction is one disease with numerous manifestations. This list is only the symptoms the disease is the same in each case. Narcotics Anonymous is the answer. This is the only self-help organization that approaches the problem directly by focusing on the disease of addiction.
