Sorry if this offends anyone... its just that when I need to go to the toilet it usually comes out really fast and I'm done in not much more time than just having a wee. My boyfiend on the otherhand spends an age in there and he says its cos it literally takes that long to get it all the way out, not cos he's just sitting there for the fun of it. He says his muscles just don't seem to push, instead it feels like it's being sucked back up, hmmm lovely! Does he have a constipation problem??? Why does it vary so much from person to person?

It just seems to vary. Also I thnk some people like to get it over and done with while others seem to like to take time over it . Diet also affects things like consistency of the poo so will affect the time it takes to get it all out. I usually take a book in with me lol

It takes me a few minutes usually. My brother is in for over half an hour all the time though.. I just don't get it. I think if you need to sit there that long you weren't actually ready to let it out in the first place. Straining is not how it is supposed to be. Yes, if you go one time and have the problem of not getting it out for ages then it could be constipation, but if it is a normal situation then I think they aren't ready. Like your boyfriend, my brother disagrees with me when I say "you can't possibly need to be in there that long"! He says he does need to be there and that it just takes time. Whenever I have needed I go and it comes out pretty much there and then and then I can get on with other stuff.

It doesn't take me very long at all. I would hate having to spend a lot of time on the toilet. I think it's wierd when people spend time reading or whatever. I just wanna get done and get back to whatever it is I was doing before needing to go.

I would say your boyfriend does have a constipation problem. It shouldn't take a long time to have a poo. He needs to increase his fibre and water intake. I find that Lepicol is the best form of fibre - its very gentle and produces soft gel like poos.

It varies from person to person owing to diet, exercise, bowel bacteria, nutrient status, water intake etc etc

Yep, it's a gender thing. My beloved retires to his "office" with the Racing Post for ages. But he eats as much fruit and veg as I do, so the only difference I can think of is fluids. I'm always knocking back the water, juice, etc., but he acts as if it's rationed or something.

Try to get him to drink more water, hope you have more success than me.

Oh, my God, we are all discussing our poo habits! How exciting can life get - ? Here's one for you, though: a yogi once told me if you put your hands way up high like you have to when they say "this is a stick up!" you know, reach as high as you can overhead, while you are having your poo, you have a much better and more complete elimination. I laughed at first, and then of course I had to try it, and of course, it works! I wonder how long you will think about this one before you, too, give it a try!

Thank you for asking this question! Seriously, it's something that I've wondered about many times. I myself am like you... I go in, do my business and I'm on my way (after I flush and wash my hands of course :) But my husband does the same thing as your boyfriend. Another thing that I find baffling is why do people put reading material in the bathroom? Gross!

im the same as you! its great! i wouldnt want to be on the toilet for ages!! and its a good sign coz ur obviously eating enough fibre and have healthy bowel movements!
it doesnt mean he is constipated it all depends on how much water hes drank, how much exercise he has and ultimately how fast his peristalsis is in his intestine! nothing to worry about either way tho ! we r just luckier than most!

What gets me is all the newspapers men take up to the tiolet to read, and never bring them back down. But in answer to your question, yes, i'm in and out in a flash, hubby can be up there for half hour at a time. Gross.
