If you are just starting out and are getting sore ankle and shin splints you are over doing it. That is a problem that many beginers run into. cut your walk in half and see how you do. Your muscles are not used to it and need time to build up. Don't be in to much of a hurry as weight loss and fitness are not something you can just jump into. If you over do it you can cause injury and you will loose intrest in it all together. Start out with short walks 2 or 3 times a week and work your way up. 15 or 20 min a couple days a week is a good guidline to start with and build from there.

YES I CAN ! You have what are called overuse and muscle imbalance injuries.

1. Stop right now until your ankles and shins no longer hurt and are no longer swollen.
2. then you must eliminate the muscle imbalance that caused your shin problems.

Your calf muscles are very strong, while the shin muscles are weak. So you must do exercises to strengthen the shins. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the end of the bed. Then slowly pull your toes toward you against the resistance of the mattress. In soft and padded shoes, you can also stand while you lift your toes and forefeet off the ground. Notice that either of these contract the shin muscles.

When you start walking again, be sure to flex and stretch before and after walking. And start walking only one-fourth the time or distance you previously walked until you are comfortable. Increase the time or distance only 10% per month.

Change your lifestyle also, and do this forever. Drink lots of water, walk, run, or swim until you can do it for an hour every day except 1 then do stretching and upper body toning. Eat fruits & vegetables.

Congrats and on taking the step to shed the pounds!
I know I love walking/jogging to get in shape but I have a bad knee and bad right ankle. I was thinking of actually going to a doctor about it because maybe I need physical therapy. So my advice to you is. First make sure you are wearing comfortable appropiate sneakers for walking. If your not sure go to your nearest Finish Line or Foot Locker and ask one of the associates to help you find a proper walking shoe. Second make sure you are walking properly. There is a certain way you need to walk when you are walking for excersize. I'm not an expert on it you might need to surf the net or read some magazines/books on it. But if you are holding the wrong posture when you walk it can affect your body in the way you are mentioning.
If all else fails see a doctor. It could mean there is something wrong. ALSO dont push yourself too much. I used to get ankle, shin and knee pain when i would push myself to the limit. Take it easy build your way up. i hope this helps you in some way. Good luck!

If you have just started walking greater amounts then you are use to, then you are using muscles that are not use to being used so much. They will hurt the first few times you walk, because you are building muscle. Bascially, your muscles are healing from the workout and that is what causes the pain. The pain should go away after you have repeated the workout a few times. If it does not, consult your physician and they will more than likely do some test to figure out the problem.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!
What you need to do is warm-up exercises first ,to losen up before you walk. Any sensible stretches for about 5-10 minutes should do the trick.
So warm up, walk at a slow pace for about 5 minutes and you'll be on your way to a healthy fun walk!

Use support wraps to give your ankles/shins a bit more stability. Another thing I would recommend is to make sure you have shoes that fit your feet and fit them well- make sure there is not to much arch or to little arch and that they give your ankles enough support. Good luck!
