The breed standard for weight of an adult Shih Tzu is between 9 and 16 pounds. At 8 months, he is almost close to his adult size. I would say that he is just fine.

Some weigh up to 16 pounds, especially the males. Was one of his parents on the larger size?

shih tzus should weigh between 9 and 16 lbs. mine is about 12 lbs, her sister (from the same litter) is about 15 lbs. my mother has a male and he is a little heavier, probably about 18-20 lbs.

try replacing treats with carrots--it worked for my mom's tzu. good luck!

you may want to change his dog food to something more healthy, perhaps a veggie kind.
