I’ve always wonder why they call it a "switch" when its just a tree branch?

Because wwhenit is not a tree branch it is a twig(really small part of the switch which is a part of the branch.

The branch is the large limbs or the main limbs form the tree,
The switches are the smaller limbs sprouting from the branches.
The twihgs are the even smaller limbs sprouting form the switches.
The rest is leaves or needles.

The switch is in reference to the long slender, but flexible limbs.

Switching is an old slang word for spanking. Most northerns spanked and southerners switched. I thinkit got it's meaning in the mountains as my mother never heard of spanking when she was in the mountains as a child. Children were switched.
