My friend and I (age 25 & 26) are moving to New York City this summer and we're looking for some good places to live. We want to live in Manhattan even though we know it will be expensive. We want somewhere safe, diverse (she's Caucasian/I'm Indian), fun, close to bars, restaurants etc... you know...normal stuff for 20-somethings...

I'm from St Louis & will be in grad school & she's from Orlando & will be working full time. Any ideas where to look and where to avoid?

Battery park city?? There not much going on down there!

If you have alot of $$ try tribeca-- it's safe, fun and quiet at the same time. I live in Soho and LOVE it. One of the best places to live in the world-- but it's VERY EXPENSIVE. Soho has everything!

The East Village will give you the cheapest apartment with the most action, problem is, sometimes there is too much action. It can be loud and depending on the street a little crazy.

Most of the city south of harlem is very safe now, truly you don't need to worry to much about that. The trick to saftey is the stay inthe center of the city, anything on the water downtown can be isolated.

Check out the Park Slope area of Brooklyn. Its only a short subway ride into the city and its a great neighborhood for the young and hip (but not overly pretentious like Williamsburg), and you'll be able to get an apartment for half the price and twice the size of what you'd get in Manhattan. I've lived there for 3 years after living on the upper west side and the west village, and I would never go back to Manhattan.

For two girls in there twenties i would say SoHo around Houston st. and greenwhich village both great areas. Soho is more fashion oriented its kind of close to the fashion district and greenwhich villiage is more diverse and artistic. hope i helped o and avoid Chinatown (great place to shop, bad place to live!!) and avoid Harlem (trashy area, not very safe)) if u have a lot of money then upper east side by central park best place in the city but apartments run from 1.5 million + so i hope i helped upper west side is OK too little less expensive but still alot of money.

well my best friend moved to NYC a few years ago.. haha she's kinda rich, and she has an AWESOME place!! I'm 20 .. so i can kinda like see where you would want to stay.. she lived in battery park city.. it's like right around where the twin towers collapsed =[.. but it's like a few blocks away.. it's a GREAT place to live.. it's prettier than most parts.. there's a huge park that's right on the hudson river, and she has a waterview from her apartment.. you can see the statue of liberty from the park perfectly!! she's also right by the world financial center which has shops, restaurants, etc... then there's a shuttle bus that comes around her appartment, and has many stops.. and it's free! so sometimes we'll just hop on and go to the south street seaport. that's awesome too!... overall.. it's great.. battery park city.. near Chambers St... it's safe, pretty, full of sights, yet there's still plenty of fun things like restaurants, shops, clubs =] haha..

hope i helped!.. i hope you at least look around there!

I would agree that Battery Park City is a cheap place in lower manhattan. Most young people have ventured out to greenpoint brooklyn or williamsburg in brooklyn since it is only one or two stops away from the city. "L" train.

Same with northern queens, Astoria to be exact is only one or two stops on the "N" train.

Places to avoid Harlem, spanish harlem, hunts point in the bronx

I am a graduate of John Jay (class of 1975) and have lived in Part Slope and Prospect Heights, Brooklyn from the time i went there to this very day. My wife and I think this is the smartest thing we ever did.

unless you have jobs lined up or money you will be better off living in the brooklyn or queens area .the commute to nyc is a short subway ride away if you plan to work in the city. some nice places to check out are in howard beach astoria bensonhurst floral park i would suggest that you go to a realestae as they will guide you to a safe neighborhood ...good luck

Depends on how much money you have.
Greenwich Village is awesome for people in their 20's but Brooklyn might be more affordable, although significantly less exciting. Where are you going to grad school?
