He's 5 years old. This is his first blood test. So not sure how he'll react.

Can he sit on my lap ? - so i can comfort him & try to hold him still.

What's the best way to keep him still.

He's gonna hate it - & scream the place down.

tell him that its going to hurt...and tell him that its going to hurt for however long it will take to get the blood...then have him sit for that amount of time to convince him that it wont hurt for very long...

You know, I've always hated getting my son's blood drawn. As it so happens, I learned that he takes it a lot better than I do! I believe you can keep him on is lap. DEFINITELY give him something to look forward to after... like going to the park or an ice cream or a toy he's been wanting really bad.. entise him in this way so that he has something to look forward to, so that his mind isn't ONLY on the needle, you know?

During the blood drawing, try to keep his mind off it. When the needle goes in, say something like "that's not so bad, is it?" and encourage him to stay strong. Make him feel like a "big boy" for going through with it.

Good luck!! I'm sure he'll do fine =)

Be calm. Kids are NOT dumb. He'll pick up on your nervousness and fear.
I always explained to my kids what was going to happen and why the day before. Don't lie, but don't over-do it either.
My kids have never once cried or fussed for immunizations or blood work. The most they've done is say "OUCH"
He can sit in your lap, but it may be better if you are to one side to distract him from looking at the needle.

I think if they know what to expect, it isn't so bad.
"It will hurt like a pinch for a few seconds, then it's done. It is important to do this because _________".

Well beleive me it wasn't that long ago that I was a kid I am 16 and still gettin my shots I don't cry but I get nervous. Naw when I was smaller such as your sons age the first time I ever got a shot I creid my butt off yelling at my parents beleive me if memory serves me right there will be tears flying and he might be angry at ya for a few min. Beleive me u can try to distract him all u want he might even struggle most little ones do I know I did. If he doesn't scream or fuss well that would be a first for me.

Take a book with pictures, something he really likes. Keep up a dialogue with him and try to de-focus from the needle. Speak to the phlebotomist (technician who draws the blood) ahead of time and see if they have measures they can use. There are numbing creams, and there are even hypos with butterfly wings. Yes, he can sit on your lap.

The very fact that you stated he is going to hate it and scream the place down guarantees that he will do just that...

Children live up or down to our expectations even that young.

If you remain calm and act like it's no big deal then that's how he will react. But by your making a big production out of it that's how he will react as well.

i have never had a blood test so i dont really know but i am sure that if you talk to your doctors they would understand and would do something to make him feel better (ei- perhaps they would let him sit on your lap or perhaps they would give him a teddy bear to hold)

I really dont know but i expect that with someone as young as 5 they would understand
