No. Your credit improves by showing that you pay back money you've borrowed in full and on time. With a pre-paid card, you don't borrow anything, so it doesn't improve your credit. It's a catch-22, but it is surmountable. First Premier Bank offers a credit card for people with bad or no credit, Orchard Bank does as well. You'll have to pay a few dollars to apply, but it's a real credit card, with a real limit, and it will really improve your credit.

No. Your score is based on how well you show you are responsible with money. Do you pay bills on time? Are you overextended on credit? Do you own property or are you making loan payments? The card you get has nothing to do with this.
