First of all congratulations on your decision to help yourself. :)
I am a personal fitness trainer and enjoy helping people like you every day. :)
Here are basic recommendations that you can start with.

Food as Fuel:

Going without breakfast because you planning a big dinner is as silly as filling up your car's gas tank after you finish the trip. Eat all of the foods that are good for you; all of the grains, vegetables, fruites and lean proteins that you enjoy. Eat 6 small meals a day. Eating smaller meals more often will help to speed up your metabolism. Missing meals slow your metabolism. Also chew your food at least 30-40 times every time you take a bite. This will slow down your meal time and it easier to digest your food.

Hunger can stress the body and trigger the release of cotisol, a hormone that encourages the storage of fat in the abdomen. To keep hunger under control, split your meals and snacks into 5 or 6 minimeals.

Water - Drink TONS of water!

If you add 2-3 liters of water to you diet you will feel better - PROMISE. You will have to use the restroom often, BUT you will loose weight, inches, feel less bloated, and retain less water IF you add water to your diet. Men who are overweight should add up to galon of water a day. Sip throgh out the day for best result.

Your Body Needs Daily Exercise.

The only way to be fit is to exercise on the regular basis: daily if possible. Some benefits of daily exercise are: you don't get sick as often, you have more energy and you sleep better. Exercise doesn't have to be structured.
If it is something you enjoy doing, you'll look forward to it. Walking or riding a bike with your children to school is fun. Even though it may only be a couple of miles, it is something.
If you aren't looking forward to your next workout, do something else. Walking is probably one of the best fat burning exercises you can do - just walk more!

Have Realistic Expectations

You dont get out of shape over night so do not expect to loose weight over night neither. You can loose 10-12 pounds a month just by exercising more - without dieting! I promise you will feel better, get more fit and reach a higher level of satisfaction by starting slowly and expecting moderate weight and measurement losses.
Think within longer time frames, and a pound or two on a scale won't seam so important.

Cross-Training

Every few weeks plan a change in your routine. Note only will your mind be more challenged, your body will have to adapt and the body will benefit from the new stimuli. The body is an amazing adaptable machine. It will begin to burn less fat as an energy source for the same activity if you don't change your programe regularly.

Get 7 to 8 hours of shut-eye a night

Chronic sleep deprivation can raise cortisol levels. It can also drive down levels of the appetite-control hormone leptin, making you feel hungry.

Laugh more

Here's a tactic anyone can stick with! In a study conducted at Loma Linda University, men and women who watched a humorous video had 30% less cortisol in their blood not only while watching the tape but also up to 24 hours later.

I hope this will help. Email me if you have any questions

Healthy and Sustainable Weight Loss:
First of all, stay away from diet supplements and don't restrict calories too much, both are counterproductive to what you want to achieve. When you do start to eat again, you will be sure to gain back whatever you lose, plus some more. When you don't eat your body perceives itself as starving and lowers your metabolism (how fast you burn calories) to compensate. Instead, you should go for weight loss in a manner that will last.
Your body actually raises its' metabolism each time you eat. What you should do is take your normal diet and spread it out over 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day. This will help give your metabolism a boost.
Stay away from the obvious things - cookies cakes and candies. Soda is a real killer; one twelve ounce can of soda will support about 11 pounds of body weight for a body at rest for an entire day. Don't eat anything within 4 hours of going to bed. And stay away from things made with white flour; your body processes it just like sugar. Eat foods made from whole grains instead.
Any continuous exercise (walking, cycling, etc.) that you do for more than twenty minutes kicks in the fat burning machine. After twenty minutes, on average, your body starts to burn fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. And, you can do your exercises first thing in the morning. This gives your metabolism a boost for the entire day.

Exercise works better than cutting calories when trying to lose weight

(NewsTarget) Exercising is a more effective way to lose weight than cutting calories alone, according to a new study recently published in the online edition of the Journal of Applied Physiology.

Researchers from St. Louis University's Doisy College of Health Sciences recruited 34 people between the ages of 50 and 60, who were either overweight or toward the high end of normal weight. The participants were split into two groups -- the first group of 18 was put on a diet, while the second group of 16 exercised.

The dieting group reduced their total calorie intake by 16 percent per day for the first three months of the study. For the final nine months, the dieters reduced their caloric intake by 20 percent.

The second group exercised to burn 16 percent of their caloric intake per day for the first three months, then increased their workouts to burn 20 percent of their calories for the final nine months.

By the study's end, both groups lost roughly 9 to 10 percent of their total body weight. However, the researchers found that the participants of the dieting group lost muscle mass during their weight loss, while the exercising group did not.

"If push comes to shove and somebody wants to know if they should diet or exercise to lose weight, I would suggest exercise, provided they are willing to put in the extra time and effort and not offset the gains they make by eating more," said Edward Weiss, the study's lead author.

Though the most effective weight loss strategy is to combine diet and exercise, the researchers emphasized that people who only exercise to lose weight are missing out on some unique health benefits of calorie restriction.

"It's important that dieting not be seen as a bad thing because it provides enormous benefits with respect to reducing the risk of disease and is effective for weight loss," Weiss said. "Furthermore, based on studies in rodents, there is a real possibility that calorie restriction provides benefits that cannot be achieved through exercise-induced weight loss."

Hi there, if losing some pounds of any description is what you want then I used a great website and coach who helped me. They were very friendly and gave me lots of great advice. I needed to lose 40 pounds and I did so fairly easily. The website is www.myhealthabc.com once you fill in your details then you can see the full range of products they have. The products really work and you feel great whilst losing weight, its all nutrition based.
I lost all my weight in less than three months and they have helped me to keep it off. I would definitely recommend using them, the tips you get and encouragement are excellent (their advice and time is FREE). I am still with them so I stay healthy. If you just want to buy the products and not use the coaching then you can do that aswell, there is a link in there to email them so you can tell them you just want to buy and not speak to anyone. The owners will even advise you via email on what to purchase depending on what you want to lose, my sister did it this way (she was more self conscious than me) and lost 76 pounds in less than five months. These guys are just great, try them.

Even though you have kids, find some time for yourself. Get your kids interested in doing exercise with you (well depending on how young your kids are). Another alternative, can be hiring a babysitter while she's in the house taking care of the kids you can work out at home. I would not suggest drinking pills....soooo false advertisement. Exercise is great for the mind and body! Good luck!

a mother of 5 at age 28??? i'm not judging here, but i wish you would have stayed in school instead of starting a family... there were way too many spelling and grammatical errors in that paragraph.... but regardless, i do credit you for wanting to get healthier.

first of all, you won't necessarily see results right away. just keep up eating healthier foods and smaller portions... now as far as exercise goes.. since you're busy with your kids, you should try to encorporate them into your workout regimen. i don't know how old they are, but you could play some handball or 4 square or some other kind of game like that with them.... you could also ride bikes with them. they sell those neat little baby attatchments that hook onto the back of bikes so that you can ride around with your little ones right behind you. exercising with your kids will keep you and them physically active, teach them good exercising habits, as well as help your relationship with them.

i wish you the best of luck.
