get the test. do you have white spots on the back of your throat? a throat swab will rule out strep. Extreme fatigue and swollen lymph nodes go along with mono. but you gotta get the blood test to rule out mono.

I had mono about 5 years ago and it wasn't fun. Throat got so sore and swollen I could barely swallow water - no kidding. I had the throat swab to check for strep done twice and that wasn't it - they finally did a blood test and a few other things to determine it was mono.

Frankly, you should get the throat swab done to rule out strep and if that's not it then it likely is mono in which case a blood test will only confirm it but since it's a virus there's nothing else that can be done - you just have to let it run it's course.

All they might be able to do is to give you something to gargle in your throat to numb it enough to make swallowing easier - that's what I got and honestly it didn't even help that much. Luckily I got through the worst of it in about 2 weeks. - It can drag on for some people much longer and the exhaustion part of it can drag on for months - sorry to say.

Something else I wasn't expecting was a white substance that coated the back of my throat - didn't look too good.

Good luck to you.

GET THE TEST. It's the only way to tell if you have mono or strep (which can be cultured by a throat swab) ... but MONO can be 'TERRIBLE' and you can get 'rhematic fever' with it and end up with a 'bad heart' and heart disease. Mono isn't really as bad as it sounds, but you need to do the things your doctor tells you to do or it will get worse. I had it, I know ... and I hate needles too, especially when the 'nurse' seems to want to throw it at me from across the room because she doesn't want to catch mono. That WON'T happen to you ... it's 35 years later and a different country with better medicine ... but if I could stand it then, you can stand it now.
