really easy one you can do out of a decent home kitchen is custom cakes. and too, with every tom dick and harry opening up espresso/coffee places, you can get small contracts for muffins and such.

Read up a LOT on different dietary lifestyles so you're not at a loss when you do get a customer. Kosher, salt-free, fat-free, vegetarian, etc...

Let your neighbors know that you'll do it. Stop by with a flyer and business card. Tell them how much time you'll need, even if it's for a family dinner. Hand out business cards (calling cards, actually) to whomever you meet. Do you know anyone who throws dinner parties? Let them know. Don't be shy.

When they ask what you can do, say it's anything from delivering a loaf of homemade bread, to a full-on dinner party where you cook in their house and clean up afterwards so they can enjoy the party. Have a few sample menus you can reel off the top of your head. And mention if they have something in mind, you can do that too.

It's really a lot of fun. Make sure to figure in all, ALL your costs when they ask for prices. I'd go cost plus 25% at least. I have a couple cousins who have done this, and one is a multi-millionaire now.

I love it when people go for their dreams!

First, get some solid experience. Apply for a position in a local bistro, but not as a cook. Apply for a job as a kitchen assistant and then watch and learn. There is so much more to cooking for people than just, well, cooking for people. Do the job for free if you have to, but get that experience. Putting down on your resume that you were an apprentice at a nice little but well known bistro in your area will do more for your catering prospects than trying to get something started with nothing on your resume.

Since most of the places you will want to get experience at are open for dinner only, you will be able to keep a day job, if you need the income.

consider being a private chef/cook. I can't imagine cooking for a party to be fun....
