Sometimes my minature schnauzer (1 year old) gets out and runs away! Scares me to death cuz I live close to a busy road where she could easily get hit...I take her for lots of walks but she still seems to want to bolt when she gets free...

Hmm..PooPoo on the last aswer...My dog is spayed and has been enrolled in classes already but if anyone even things about leaving the door open shes gone before you can get the first letter out of "Close the door!". But she just wants to expolore...shes a curious puppy (1 year old also!)..what i did was teach her a word...that if i ever say it...she knows no matter what she will get a treat from me....unfortunately i tought her this around holloween so the key word is "Candycorn", ::Looks around to see if Samoa heard:: It doest matter if shes down the street and aroud the cornor she comes running when she hears this word...because she knows she'll get something tastee. Also, never ever beat her when she comes back, who would want to come back when they know theres a beating instored when they return?... Not me....or samoa..

Buy an x-pen..it is a small portable kennel that you can set up right outside your door...some dogs simply want to run. An x-pen is great because you can take it in and out of the house or away on trips with you so your doggie will always be safe when going out to have a pee. If you want to practice going out with her off a leash do it on a rainy day with a juicy piece of steak in your hand for her. First of all its raining so she is less likley to want to go anyplace but back in the house. Before you open the door to go out show her the steak and give her a small piece of it..let her walk 2 feet away from you and call her back showing her the meat..she will come back and get another bite...so on and so on..keep doing it..but it will take a while before you think you can trust her.

Good luck!

Schnauzers will follow their noses and become "selectively deaf". Don't ever let her walk off-leash, make sure she's in a securely fenced yard, and be careful when you open the front door.

Well i would say that ... you should keep the (1 year old) in the house where it is safe and teach he/she to stay close to you when you go for walk's and stuff. Is there anyway you can teach your dog to stay by your side when you are going for walks? because the last thing you want to think about is your dog getting ran ovwer that is what happend to mine.

Maybe he just needs more attention and things to do. Play with him a little more or take him on more walks. Just make sure your doors are ALWAYS closed tight and when you take him for a walk make sure he as a good leash on.

You should put a gate into a room that you don't oftenly use! Only take her out for food,water,walks,etc... Don't let her run around the house! :D

is she mainly in the house getting out when you open the door, or is she outside most of the time getting out of a fenced yard?
