In my huble opinion, it's based on a great mistake made by the American car companies about twenty years ago. It used to be true that a honda would outlast any of the small, cheaply built American counterparts, and American automakers thought it was just a fad. That, however, was a multi-billion dollar mistake. However, that is absolutely NOT the case now. Yeah, a lot of kids are buying imports, and some (like the Mitsubishi's of the late early 90's) rode on the theory of all japanese cars are better built, but end up in the junkyard just as quickly as a Dodge Omni.

That being said, the big two American automakers (remember, Chrysler is now German) aren't stupid, and both Ford and GM are making cars that will last as long as, get as good milage as, and hold resale just as well as any Import counterpart. Unfortunately, it's an uphill battle to convince people that got burned by cheaply built American cars in the past, and those people's kids are following the advice they got from their parents.

As far as American jobs, money into the economy, and revenue dollars going out of the country, your guess is as good as mine. I still believe in the "be American, Buy American" philosophy. On a more personal note, drive your Toyota through parts of Michigan that are ghost towns because American's continuing trend to send our money to support the local Tokyo economy and Japanese standard of living and then tell me how patriotic you feel.

Everyone should simply walk through a Ford or Chevy dealership and see what's available before going straight to a Honda or Toyota store.

You should buy the car that you like, J.D. Powers confirms that quality is about even now. Most of the money that goes to Toyota ends up in Japan. Ford and GM put so much more into the U.S. economy. That doesn't matter that much to me as a consumer. I like cars for the car itself. I have both domestic and foreign cars that I would consider purchasing.

We have choices, we use our buying power, what is wrong with that? People tend to look at some criteria eg. price, engine, body etc. then make their minds. If you see that many people buy foreign cars then, you should know what that means, right. There is something about foreign cars that people like but american cars don't have it. Make a survey, questionnaire or whatsoever you call it, then improve. It is a simple marketing but nobody cares to do it, and the result is what you see today. But I believe this can create competition, and competition is good for the user. User can get what they really want. If we really did the R&D, it has a domino effect too. Not only our people will buy our car, foreigners too might even buy our car. Just my inner thought

Well, plenty of "American" cars are actually made in foreign countries.

It's a global economy. Learn to live with it. American Hondas and Hyundais, and Mexican Fords and Chevys. Canadian Fords and Dodges.

Don't forget that whatever the badge on it, an American trucker brought it to the dealer.

good question
it doesn't support the US economic system by buying from other countries
it hurts the US
so why? I suppose cause theres a lot of choices and not everyone thinks of what will benefit your area - they think about price and looks
