Hi,

You're going to feel tired, the extent of that depends on the severity of your mono. You'll want to sleep a lot more than usual.

People with less severe forms of mono can still function and go to work or school, but they will still feel kind of tired.

More severe forms of mono (which I, unfortunately, have experienced), can lay a person up in bed for anywhere between one to four weeks. It can also make a person nauseous and can trigger liver infections.

The thing to watch out for is if your eyes and/or skin turn yellow, or jaundice, which indicates a liver infection (which can happen with more severe forms of mono). If that happens, go to a doctor and get checked out, because that can be serious.

The only thing you can do is get lots of rest, drink fluids, and give yourself time to get better.

Hopefully yours is the less severe kind (the majority of people get that kind of mono, so hopefully my story doesn't freak you out!).

Mono is known as the kissing disease, but is a form of Epstein Barr virus. Your doctor will probably first ask you some questions about your symptoms and then may do blood tests to confirm the diagnosis. One common test used to diagnose mono is called the Monospot test. Sometimes other blood tests are needed if the results of the Monospot test aren't clear.
How is mono treated?
The main point of treatment is to relieve your symptoms. The following list includes tips on treatment.
Rest.
Drink plenty of fluids.
If you have a sore throat, gargle with salt water, or suck on throat lozenges, hard candy or flavored frozen desserts (such as Popsicles).
You may want to take acetaminophen (one brand name: Tylenol) or ibuprofen (some brand names: Advil, Motrin, Nuprin) to relieve pain and fever. Do not give aspirin to children. Aspirin should be avoided because it has been associated with a disease called Reye's syndrome in children. Reye's syndrome is a serious illness that can lead to death. You should also discuss with your doctor what medications are needed if any.
Avoid sports, activities or exercise of any kind until your doctor tells you it's safe. Moving around too much puts you at risk of rupturing your spleen. You need to avoid physical activities for about 3 to 4 weeks after the infection starts
Hope this helps.

Mono is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, although similar signs and symptoms are sometimes caused by cytomegalovirus. Mono is most common in young adults or adolescents. The infection often goes unrecognized in young children due to minimal symptoms.

Mono has an incubation period of four to six weeks, although in young children this period is shorter. Symptoms such as fever and sore throat usually lessen within a couple of weeks, although fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes and swollen spleen may last for a few weeks longer.

Symptoms of mono - mononucleosis:

Sore throat, perhaps a strep throat that doesn't get better with antibiotics
Fever
Swollen lymph nodes in the neck and armpits
Swollen tonsils
Weakness
General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
Skin rash
Soft, swollen spleen
Loss of appetite
Less frequently occurring symptoms of mono include:

jaundice (yellow cast to skin)
headache
neck stiffness
sensitivity to light
cough
shortness of breath
chest pain
rapid heart rate
fatigue
nosebleed
hives
Also referred to as the kissing disease
