You would need to get the real stuff made mostly from wormwood. They do sell bastardized versions in North America but they taste kind of like Chartreuse or Jaggermeister and don't really do much expcept get you drunk- I have had it and I would say not worth the price tag. I friend of mine brought a good bottle back from Amsterdam but we have yet to crack it open.
Apparently the dead poets of the world lived on it because of the opiate like hayze they were sent into- from legend it is suppose to be like nothing else on earth. I have yet to find this out though.

Depends on what you are expecting. If you want a well flavored anise based liquor, it's worth the cost. If you want to trip or hallucinate it isn't.
There are many products out there that are fake absinthe and vendors sell them at very high prices trying to take advantage of ignorance. All places that claim absinthe is hallucinogenic should be avoided and most places that sell czech products claiming they are absinthe should be avoided as well.

If you are looking for a cheap drunk, buy grain alcohol and put some green stuff in it. As most people don't know what absinthe tastes like, you could prolly get away with it. Why pay for a name?I don't know about the flavor, but if you want to make your own, you could add wormwood to grain alcohol, but it is quite toxic!!
